DIY Stamped Trees Gift Wrap + 24 Creative Gift Wrap Ideas!

This fall, my talented friend Rachel of Lines Across launched Let’s Wrap Stuff, a website devoted to all things gift wrap related.  You know how much I love anything and everything related to gift giving!!  Well, to celebrate its launch, Rachel challenged me and a select group of talented bloggers to come up with a creative gift wrap idea using plain kraft paper. Who doesn’t love brown paper packages tied up with string?  {Are you singing My Favorite Things with me now?!}

Inspired by my easy stamped gift tags from last year, I created a matching gift wrapping partner in crime:

DIY Stamped Trees Gift Wrap

Supplies

• Kraft wrapping paper
• Triangle makeup sponges
• Acrylic Paint in three shades of green – I used Americana paint in Turf Green, Leprechaun and Apple Green
• Metallic Bronze, Silver and Gold Sharpies

The How-To

First, you will need to create your homemade tree stamps.  Yep, these are made with cheapy triangle shaped make up sponges.  You may remember them from the stamped tree gift tags that I made last year!  If you glue two make up sponges back to back, you can make a large tree. Trim the bottom off of two sponges to make two additional sizes of trees.  You may waste a few sponges trying to get these smaller trees – it is a little tough to cut them and end up with a straight edge on the bottom.  BUT, since this is hand made gift wrap, it doesn’t have to be perfect!

Once you have laid out a section of your kraft wrapping paper, begin by stamping the large trees you made by gluing two make up sponges together.  I use a paper plate to squeeze the paint on because it is a flat surface and I can make sure to cover the whole stamp.  You want a solid covering of paint, but not a big goopy mess.  Another tip – gently press the trees down to stamp.  If you press too hard, you may lose the shape of your trees.  I practiced a few times on some scrap card stock before I headed for my gift wrap. I made rows of large trees, but get creative and make your own design if you’d like!

Next, using one of the stamps made from a makeup sponges that were trimmed, add smaller trees in a second color.  I overlapped some of these trees and stamped some standing alone.

Now … you guessed it … stamp the smallest trees in the third shade of green.  Overlap some of these and add some free standing, too.

Don’t worry if the paper looks wrinkled – it will smooth and flatten as the paint dries.  Allow your stamped trees to dry completely before moving to the next step.

Using the bronze metallic Sharpie to add tree trunks to all of your trees – basically just itty bitty rectangles!

Then, use the gold Sharpie to randomly add sprials in the blank sections of the paper.

Finally, with your silver Sharpie, add asterisk ‘snowflakes’, again, filling in any blank section of the paper.

Now that you have mastered your DIY stamped trees gift wrap, use it to package gifts for your favorite people!  Add lengths of ribbon, pom pom trim, a fluffy tulle bow … and don’t forget to add a cute stamped gift tag, too!
